Longines as a brand has really been delivering lately with a lot of great releases. Among their recent releases, one model stands out, The Longines Legend Diver reference L3.764.4.16.62. That’s the new white matt dial version. It brings a fresh look to this beloved dive watch line that dates back to 1959. This piece perfectly blends historical design with modern day wearability.
Let’s dive more into this new release (see what I did there?).
For years, enthusiasts have been asking (which really means complaining; watch collectors don’t tend to ask for anything) for a Legend Diver between the 42mm and 36mm versions. Apparently Longines got tired of getting slandered on Redditt and introduced the 39mm diameter version of the Legend Diver.
It has a manageable 47mm lug-to-lug distance, slightly downturned lugs, and a slim profile of 12.7mm thick. The lug to lug makes it wearable on a variety of wrists. Despite its refined dimensions, it maintains a robust 300 meters of water resistance and is ISO 6425 compliant, confirming its capability as a true tool watch.
The Legend Diver stands apart visually due to its heritage as a Super Compressor-style watch, featuring dual crowns and an internal rotating bezel. This design harks back to the original reference 7042 from 1959. The internal bezel was originally conceived to prevent accidental adjustments underwater.
The reference L3.764.4.16.6 features a striking white matte dial, which is a huge departure from the lacquer finishes seen on earlier black or blue versions. This matte finish provides a clean, crisp look. The hour markers are painted with Arabic numerals and indexes. A key change on this white dial Legend Diver is the use of black hands, offering excellent contrast against the bright dial, improving readability compared to silver hands used previously.
Powering the 39mm Legend Diver is the Longines-exclusive Caliber L888.610. This isn’t just a run-of-the-mill movement—it’s COSC-certified, which means it meets the Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute’s rigorous standards for accuracy: we’re talking -4 to +6 seconds per day. That’s the kind of reliability you’d expect from a piece that bridges vintage aesthetics with modern expectations.
The movement beats at 25,200 vibrations per hour—slightly lower than the industry-standard 28,800, which helps extend the movement’s longevity and contributes to its impressive 72-hour power reserve. Translation: you can take this off Friday night, pick it up Monday morning, and it’s still ticking along without missing a beat.
The L888.610 is built off an ETA base but customized for Longines, giving it a level of performance that feels very "in-house adjacent" while still keeping the price grounded. It’s tucked behind a solid caseback engraved with the signature Legend Diver motif—no sapphire window here, and honestly, it doesn’t need one. This is a tool watch, after all.
The new 39mm Longines Legend Diver strikes a near-perfect balance between heritage charm and everyday practicality. It's compact enough for smaller wrists but still bold enough to wear with confidence. The dual-crown Super Compressor aesthetic brings something visually unique to the table, and that stark white dial with black hands is crisp, legible, and just different enough to stand out in a sea of divers.
At $3,250 on a strap or $3,550 on a bracelet, it’s hard not to see this as one of the stronger dive watch offerings in its category. You get vintage-inspired design, modern specs, COSC accuracy, and real wrist presence—all from a brand with legitimate historical clout.
If you're in the market for a diver that does things a bit differently—but still does them well—the Legend Diver 39mm deserves a serious look.
